How it works

1. Drop in your images. A whole batch is fine — they all get the same treatment.
2. Type a width, a height, or both. Leave one blank and it is worked out from the other.
3. Or pick a preset if you are sizing for a specific platform.
4. Choose whether to fit the whole image inside those dimensions or fill them and crop.

Fit, fill or stretch?

Fit inside scales the image until it sits entirely within your dimensions. Nothing is lost, but unless the shapes match exactly the result will be smaller than you asked in one direction. Fill and crop scales until the box is covered and trims the overflow evenly from both edges — this is what you want for avatars and thumbnails, where a consistent shape matters more than keeping every pixel. Stretch forces the exact dimensions and distorts the picture; it is almost never what you want, and it is here for the rare case where it is.

Should I enlarge images?

You can, but there is no detail to invent — enlarging a 400px image to 2000px gives you a soft 2000px image, not a sharper one. Resizing down is lossless in the sense that matters; resizing up is wishful. If you need a larger version, go back to the original file.

Does resizing lose quality?

The scaling itself is done with high-quality smoothing, so downsizing generally looks excellent. What costs quality is the re-encoding afterwards, which is why the quality slider matters here too. Resize once from your original rather than resizing something that has already been through the process.
